04 February 2025

The 14th LCI Symposium One Health - Infections without Boundaries took place on January 28 and 29, 2025 at the Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB) on the DESY campus in Hamburg-Bahrenfeld. The event brought together international researchers from various disciplines to discuss global infectious diseases, interdisciplinary prevention and the future of the One Health approach.

The symposium comprised four thematic sessions, ranging from the history of tropical medicine to prevention strategies and ways of responding to health challenges. Highlights included keynote lectures by:

Prof. Dr. David L. Heymann from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, who explained the basics of the One Health concept.

Prof. Dr. Thomas Großbölting, Director of the Research Centre for Contemporary History in Hamburg, who presented a historical overview of tropical medicine and the role of Bernhard Nocht.

Prof. Dr. Marion Koopmans from Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, who drew lessons from past pandemics for future health strategies.

Prof. Dr. John H. Amuasi, Head of the Global and One Health Research Group at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine and the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine in Ghana, who presented new approaches and perspectives in response to outbreaks of infection.

Further presentations dealt with topics such as the influence of climate change on the spread of infectious diseases, the role of wild and domestic animals as pathogen reservoirs and innovative strategies for containing antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

The symposium underlined the importance of the One Health approach, which emphasizes the close connection between human, animal and environmental health. The interdisciplinary exchange initiated new perspectives and collaborations to tackle global health challenges more effectively.
